A Corner in Wheat is a 1909 short film which tells of a greedy tycoon who tries to corner the world market on wheat, destroying the lives of the people who can no longer afford to buy bread. It was directed by D. W. Griffith and adapted by Griffith and Frank E. Woods from the novel The Pit (1903) by Frank Norris. Intercutting (cross-cutting) between still tableaux of the poor in the bread line and the lavish, active parties of the wealthy speculator somewhat anticipates the collision montage...

Henriette and Louise, a foundling, are raised together as sisters. When Louise goes blind, Henriette swears to take care of her forever. They go to Paris to see if Louise's blindness can be cured, but are separated when an aristocrat lusts after Henriette and abducts her. Only Chevalier de Vaudrey is kind to her, and they fall in love. The French Revolution replaces the corrupt Aristocracy with the equally corrupt Robespierre. In its time, "The Birth of a Nation" was a masterpiece. Its racist undertones and revisionism are quite disturbing, but it is still worth watching for its historical influence. IMDb entry: http://imdb.com/title/tt0004972/

Director D.W. Griffith's expensive, most ambitious silent film masterpiece Intolerance (1916) is one of the milestones and landmarks in cinematic history. Many reviewers and film historians consider it the greatest film of the silent era. The mammoth film was also subtitled: "A Sun-Play of the Ages" and "Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages." Griffith was inspired to make this film after watching the revolutionary Italian silent film epic Cabiria (1914) by director Giovanni...

The Girl And Her Trust directed by D W Griffith in 1912. It is a remake of an earlier film, The Lonedale Operator but by this time Griffith had learned a great deal about the making of movies. The picture has close-ups, and ironic cutting. Te see the words, "Nothing ever happens here" and then cut to the tramps under the platform. But toward the end he cuts between a train and a hand car and to build suspense he actually mounts the camera on a vehicle racing along the road and on the...

The title, is Probably an Americanization of the French, Les Mousquetaire de Pigalle, This is one of the better Griffith shorts. Made in 1913, it has a lovely performance by Lilian Gish which should remind you why she became a great star. Harry Cary who later did unbelievable stunts for John Ford and other Western directors is also in the picture. He is the tough looking gang member. Notice the interesting crowd scenes in the alley and on the street where every member of the crowd has a part to...

The Gibson Goddess was directed by D W Griffith in 1909. It is one of Griffith's few ventures into comedy with mixed results. The Gibson Girl was a very popular image at the time. Here, from IMDB is an anonymous description of the film. "A pack of admirers won't leave a beautiful woman alone at a seaside resort, so she devises a plan. She appears in a leg-revealing swimsuit, but the stockings have been stuffed with cotton to make her limbs appear misshapen. All but one of the men is driven...

The House of The Closed Shutters was produced in 1910. It is a Civil War story about a man who turns out to be a coward so his mother closes the shutters of her house for years after. Like many of Griffith's shorts, it is over done with histrionics, particularly by the mother. It is of interest only historically.
